Description

Burley tobacco is a light, golden or yellow form of tobacco that is air-cured. Although it often has a lighter colour than other types of tobacco, it has a denser, cigar-like flavour. This probably has to do with the low sugar content of burley tobacco.

Sugar is often added to burley tobacco to soften its intense, dark flavour. It is also combined with other types of tobacco to produce a blended, balanced and flavourful smoke.

Although people have been growing tobacco for centuries, Burley tobacco did not gain much popularity until the late 1800s. However, it was soon banned in Canada because of its sugar content.

It is not as intense as Turkish tobacco, which is known worldwide for its flavour, but Burley tobacco hits much harder than most flue-cured tobaccos. For this reason, it is often used by pipe enthusiasts who enjoy a rich, deep smoke.
